Help with Magnavox CDB- 5. So this wonderful "score" is turning into something of a challenge.. I'm having the ubiquitous "laser won't read" error, and I'm curious about some possible "modifications" to the unit. After I got the cd player home, I was able to play cd's no problem.
In fact, I A/B'd it against another Magnavox player with mild mods. After several cd's, it started not reading ("Err") scratched discs, then it wouldn't read any.

- Help with Magnavox CDB-560 please! Discussion in 'Digital Sources' started by jhoyt, Jan 8. I don't have an open '560 in front of me or a manual for the CDM-2.
I did already replace the Philips 3. F/1. 6V axial cap on the servo board.. Some of the other caps appear to have been replaced by somebody else, and maybe some added components.
There is what appears to be original solder, and then shinier "globbier" solder on the components that appear to be after- the- fact. What about replacing the other Philips axials on the other pcb's? What is the big silver can cap? Is it dual- section? With what do I replace it? What are the big fat light blue caps glued onto the empty section of the chassis?
Magnavox CDB 5. 60 LED replacements for time display. That's the display assembly part #. Made in the Philippines by some sub- vendor that is long gone. Don't bother trying to find one other than pulled from a donor unit.
I've hunted NOS stash for that one for quite awhile and always come away empty- handed. You CAN fix these displays if they have the usual failure which is death of the individual miniature LED's that form each segment, rather than problems with the potted driver IC. Tinman posted in a thread about this somewhere and I'll add that link if I can find it, but the gist of it is each segment is lit by a tiny LED that is mounted (glued? It is possible to replace these tiny failed LED's, which restores the display. You have to first carefully remove the plastic housing on top of the board in order to get to these LED's.
It'll take a good magnification system and a very steady hand to do the part replacement - you probably can't even see the tiny leads w/o magnification. BTW, that display part was shared between a number of Philips- based CD players, including some Magnavox models such as this one. Here's a couple of pictures of the NSM4. A assembly from one of my players, which should be similar to the one in the CDB- 4. Worth pointing out that my board has some other markings that differ from what the Magnavox manual lists, also i once bought what I thought was the same "NSM4.
A" board from a seller on e. Bay and what showed up was very different, though it was in fact marked with that same number. Devil's in the details apparently, and since I can't find a decoder ring for the other markings I have subsequently stuck with pulling good display boards from units with destroyed transports. John. I actually have found a schematic, but its for the Phillips 4. German. If this is the same as the Magnavox, I will look a little closer and try to see what the numbers, at least, are. Everything else will be Greek(or in this case German) to me.
EDIT: I found something: Display NSM4. A 4. 82. 2 1. 30 9. I don't know if that is that whole board or just the LEDs, though. I found the manual at Hi Fi Engine.
